High-quality bacteriological tests in a short time
Bacteriological tests are indicated for the detection of pathogenic microorganisms and yeasts responsible for infections.
The species searched for are specific and typical for each body area or biological fluid examined. These tests do not include the search for viral agents.
To undergo this type of test, you must not be taking antibiotics or have stopped taking them for at least 5-7 days. Otherwise, please inform the receptionist.
Throat swab
The test looks for Streptococcus pyogenes (group A beta-hemolytic streptococci) and other beta-hemolytic streptococci.
If you also want to test for yeasts (Candida), this must be expressly requested at reception.
Avoid using mouthwashes.
Ear swab
Comprehensive research for pathogenic microorganisms and yeasts.
On the day of the sample collection, the patient must not have cleaned the ear canal in any way.
Sputum
It should only be collected from patients with pneumonia and a productive cough capable of coughing up sputum.
Collect the sample in the morning on an empty stomach; remove any dentures, clean your mouth, and gargle with sterile distilled water.
Sputum must be coughed up and free of saliva; collect the sample in a sterile, wide-mouthed container; deliver the sample to the laboratory within 2 hours.
Tampone uretrale
This is the sample indicated for diagnosing the etiology of urethritis. The test includes a search for bacteria (excluding gonococcus) and yeasts (fungi), unless otherwise indicated by the doctor. The patient must avoid urinating for three hours before the sample is taken and must refrain from sexual intercourse for three days prior to the test.
To test for gonococcus, given the delicate nature of the germ, and for chlamydia and mycoplasma, it is necessary to book the sample collection at the headquarters in San Martino Buonalbergo.
Vaginal tampon
This is the sample taken for the etiological diagnosis of vaginitis and includes the search for bacteria (excluding gonococcus) and yeasts (fungi), unless otherwise indicated by the doctor.
Trichomonas testing, upon request from a doctor, is performed by appointment at the San Martino Buonalbergo office. Gonococcus, Chlamydia, and Mycoplasma testing are performed by appointment on an endocervical swab (see procedures below).
The test must be performed without menstruation (no bleeding). It is a completely painless sample. To prepare for the test, do not douche or douch for 3-4 days beforehand, do not have sexual intercourse for 3 days beforehand, and avoid bathing.
Endocervical swab, chlamydia and mycoplasmas
It is performed by obstetric staff upon appointment at the San Martino Buonalbergo office. The preparation methods are equivalent to the Vaginal Swab.
Sperm culture
Collect the ejaculate directly in a sterile container, taking care not to touch the internal walls with your hands or the glans.
It is advisable for the patient to abstain from sexual intercourse for at least 4 days.
Dermatophyte screening (onychomycosis)
If onychomycosis or skin fungal infections are suspected, the sample is taken by scraping the lesion site. The patient must not use nail polish or antifungals for at least 5 days. The report will be available after 20 days.
Coproculture
Collect a small amount of stool (the size of a walnut) and place it in a sterile container (containers with scoops are available at pharmacies). The sample must not be contaminated with urine and must be delivered to the laboratory within 2 hours. Testing is performed for Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., and Campylobacter spp. If, based on clinical, anamnestic, and epidemiological information, the doctor determines that other pathogens should be tested, the laboratory may request specific testing.
The material should be collected at the acute stage of the infectious process.
Finally, it should be remembered that to increase the chances of isolating pathogens, it would be advisable to examine three samples taken on different days.
Feces, search for parasites
Collect a small amount of stool (the size of a walnut) and place it in a container with a scoop that can be purchased at the pharmacy.
The following substances should not be taken before the examination: barium sulfate for radiological examinations, mineral oils, non-absorbable antidiarrheals, antimalarials, tetracyclines.
If the patient has taken these substances, it is advisable to perform the test after a week. Since some intestinal parasites are not shed daily, for accurate results, it is advisable to perform the test on at least three stool samples passed on consecutive days.
The sample can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
Stool, pinworm screening (scotch test)
Get some transparent scotch tape and a slide (provided by the Laboratory).
In the morning when you wake up and before going to the bathroom, adhere 4 cm of transparent tape to the folds of the anal opening (on the adhesive side).
The tape should then be glued flat onto the slide; deliver the sample to the laboratory in the morning.
Feces, research on rotavirus, adenovirus, helicobacter pylori
The collection procedure is the same as for stool culture. The sample must be delivered immediately to the laboratory.
Urine culture
This test determines whether the urine contains bacteria in sufficient quantities to cause infection. It is necessary to carefully follow the instructions below to avoid contaminating the sample with bacteria from other areas of the body or the environment. Use a sterile urine cup. The sample should be collected in a single void. It is recommended to collect at least half a cup. Send the urine to the laboratory within 1 hour of voiding. If more than 2 hours have passed and up to 24 hours have passed before delivery to the laboratory, keep the container refrigerated at 4°C.
