Analysis of biological samples
Urine
Standard urine test
Collect a morning urine sample, taking care to discard the first stream and collect the midstream. Deliver it to the laboratory as soon as possible (within two hours of collection). The container to be used can be picked up free of charge from the laboratory or purchased at a pharmacy. Do not use containers intended for other purposes.
It is necessary to perform it outside of the menstrual cycle.
24-hour acidified urine collection
(for the urinary measurement of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, homovanillic acid, catecholamines, vanillylmandelic acid, copper, zinc, calcium and phosphorus).
Follow the 24-hour urine collection procedure, taking care to add the preservative provided by the laboratory to the collection container after the first urination (10 ml of 6N hydrochloric acid; warning: toxic if contacted and/or swallowed and/or inhaled. In case of accidental contact, rinse thoroughly with water and seek emergency medical attention).
Urinary Cytology
Collect your second morning urine by following this procedure:
Drink at least half a liter of water; Perform a thorough local cleansing; Discard the first urine stream; Collect the urine directly in the container, taking care not to touch the inside walls; Close the container and deliver it to the laboratory as soon as possible. It is recommended to collect three samples on consecutive days.
24-hour urine collection
You need to equip yourself with a special 2-liter container that can be purchased at the pharmacy.
To carry out the collection correctly you need to:
1. Discard the first urine of the morning and note the time;
2. Collect all urine produced over the next 24 hours, taking care to match the final collection time to the time noted the previous day.
The container must be kept closed and in a cool place for the entire collection period.
Immediately deliver to the laboratory a sample transferred into a normal urine container after having mixed the container well.
Record the exact volume of the entire collection on the jar you'll be handing over: the collection containers are graduated; be careful to record the volume correctly, as any inaccuracies could affect the test results.
Creatine clearance
Collect urine for 24 hours, avoiding exposing the container to light (wrap the container in food-grade aluminum foil) and temperatures above 10°C.
To perform the test, you must take a blood sample on the day you complete your urine collection and provide your weight and height at the reception desk.
FECES
DETECTION FOR OCCULT BLOOD IN THE FECES
There is no need to follow any special diets.
You need to have the appropriate container that can be purchased at the pharmacy.
The stool should be fresh from the morning.
The amount needed to correctly perform the test is the equivalent of a ping-pong ball.
Seminal fluid
SPERIOMYOGRAM. Available soon by appointment at the Laboratory (San Martino location). Semen analysis, or spermiogram, is the most important laboratory test for identifying a man's reproductive potential. It involves evaluating the chemical and physical characteristics of semen, sperm concentration, motility, and morphology, following the parameters indicated by the WHO 2010. The test must be performed after sexual abstinence (intercourse or ejaculation) for at least 3 and no more than 5 days.
The collection must be performed in the laboratory by ipsation (masturbation) in a sterile container of the type used for urine testing, taking care not to spill the ejaculate. If the patient prefers to collect the sample at home, the sample must be delivered to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection, protected from temperature changes.
